For the second year, we are happy to bring new coffees from Vava Coffee! This is the first of 3 lots, and it's a great one.

One of the main things about the Kii washing station is consistency and quality. Year after year, this group of enthusiastic hard working farmers have created a reputation for themselves and the factory is one of the most highly sought after when it comes to quality lots.
It's not always easy to secure lots from Kii due to the high demand, but Vava has been working with them for the past 10 years and she usually gets a bunch of their top lots.

The Kii Factory, alongside the Rungeto Farmers Cooperative Society have been building their strong reputation for quality since 1953, and Vava strongly believes that the factory produces some of the best lots in all of Kirinyaga.

We are all about relationship building at Rabbit Hole, and we are so grateful to be working with Vava. You can learn more about her, Kenya and Vava Coffee in her book Coffee Milk Blood.
You can also find the Kii coffee as part of our Chocolate Berry blend!

In 2009 Vava Angwenyi made the decision to create real change in the Kenyan Coffee industry. Between the challenges of poverty, corruption and fear, she saw smiles. She saw smallholder coffee farmers  that wanted to change their lives but could not get their voices heard.
Vava Specialty Coffee is  a social enterprise in Nairobi that seeks to cause positive social and economic disruption within the coffee industry and create sustainable livelihoods for smallholder farmers.

She recently started the Gentro del Futuro - Lamu project, an organization tackling two problems the coffee industry needs to solve: farmer profitability and the involvement of the next generation of farmers.  You can learn about the project here.

The first Kenyan of the season is here! This is not only a tasty one, it's also super versatile.
We roasted it fast and just a smidgen darker than most of our African offerings to give you deep sweetness and a sirupy mouthfeel, but all the crazy tasty fruits you can find in coffees from the country.

You can expect a lot of tropical fruit notes, especially mango, and the classic taste of blackberry associated with the SL varietals.

The caramel and cacao nibs finish is just complementing and balancing the cup beautifully.

Kenyans are mostly viewed as a filter coffee, but don't be afraid to throw this in your espresso grinders!

Farmers: Rungeto Farmers Cooperative Society
Exporter: Vava Coffee
Importer: Sucafina

Price paid by us to Sucafina for the landed coffee to our roastery: 5,73USD/lb for the green coffee + 0,40USD/lb for the shipping from New Jersey.

FOB price: The price paid to Vava Coffee before it departed origin: 4,93USD/lb (minus the importer financing fees)

Farmgate price: 112.85 Kenyan Chillings (KES) per kg of cherry. This translate to roughly 4,45USD/lb of green coffee.

The national average farmgate price was between 82 and 113 KES per kg of cherries, with the highest recorded transaction at 118KES and the lowest at 10KES. Those stats are mostly for big factories.

Of the 967 factories (or processing centers) in the countries, only between 70 and 80 factories payed an average superior to 100KES.
Only 11 factories collected more than a million kilos of cherries, including Kii.

In all of Kenya, the Kirinyaga region was amongst the top payer for $/kg.
The Kii was the best in the country when you take into account volume vs price paid.
