While evaluating a table full of African coffees this Tanzanias stood out for it's originality and tropical tone.
The Amkeni coffee cooperative was founded in 2001 and was the result of several smallholder farmers that decided to join together to market their coffees so that they could control the quality of the product. The cooperative has now grown to approximately 40 member farmers.
The group is located in the village of Mwika which is close to the larger village of Marangu in Rombo district of the Kilimanjaro Region. Amkeni is located in the district of Rombo which is where the first coffee tree's were planted in the country in 1898 by catholic missionaries.
The group has won the National Taste of Harvest award and consistently produces excellent cupping coffees.
